The Wave is a generational infrastructure project that will revolutionise travel on and around the Sunshine Coast, creating a seamless public transport network that will help to shape the region and unlock new housing and economic opportunities. The Wave includes passenger heavy rail from Beerwah to Birtinya, connecting with a metro-style service to allow journeys to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD.The Wave (Rail) branch will deliver Stages 1 and 2 of The Wave. Stage 1 includes a new rail line from Beerwah to Caloundra. With $5.5 billion committed towards Stage 1 delivery, design and pre-construction activities are underway and major construction is proposed to start in 2027, subject to approvals. In March 2025, the Queensland Government committed to Stage 2, extending the rail line from Caloundra to Birtinya.
